If you’ve visited the Chavez Central Library recently, you’ll notice or hardly notice the embarassingly limited music collection. While the early-to-mid 20th century Stockton Public Library invited patrons to engage a reputable music collection, our current central library offers less CD’s than many households in the region. We don’t need to just increase our collection, but make it far more accessible. Go to a music store online or in the back of Barnes & Noble. Online, iTunes allows users to sample songs at the click of a button. Offline, Barnes & Noble places listening stations every few shelves equipped with headphones and a collection of songs from the nearby section.
At the public library in our city, we neither have resources nor ease of access. In Boston, on the other hand, their public library “is sharing Boston’s local music scene through the Internet by adding albums of area bands to its online collection of audio books, music and videos to lend to patrons through its website, as well as share with libraries around the world.” Why can’t we make headlines?
